Sonoma State takes two 5-4 games from Warriors

ROHNERT PARK — Two softball teams were finally able to get on the field to play a game as host Sonoma State swept a pair from Stanislaus State, 5-4, Thursday at the Seawolf Softball Field.

Due to weather, both teams — and most of the CCAA — have sat idle since Feb. 12 and had to move the start of this four-game set up a day to avoid more rainouts. After brushing off the dust, teams battled to two close games with the home team winning by one run each time, with the nightcap a 12-inning affair.

Stanislaus State, which last played two weeks ago on the road in Carson with a series sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills, suffered its first two losses in league play and is now 8-4 and 4-2. The Seawolves are 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the CCAA.

Nicolette Vizcaino had five hits in the doubleheader, including a 4-for-6 game two. Katelyn McDonald went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs in the first game.

In game one, trailing 5-1, the Warriors rallied for three runs in the seventh before coming up short. Alexus Martinez drove in a run and Morgan Balestreri also scored on a fielding error. McDonald plated the fourth run on a single with one out. However, Sonoma got a fouled out and a strikeout to end the game.

Kylie Ragsdale suffered the loss in the circle with four earned runs allowed on eight hits with a strikeout and a walk.

In the nightcap, the Warriors again had to rally late, scoring a run in the seventh to force extra innings at 4-4. Teams traded zeros for four innings until Sonoma State won on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th.

Anyssa Garvin threw all 11 2/3 innings and gave up five runs on 10 hits. She struck out one and walked four.

Stan State will finish out the series with two more games against the Seawolves tomorrow with the twinbill starting at Noon.
