SEASIDE —
Jaelen Ragsdale is making a really strong case as the best rookie player in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The freshman guard from Stockton leads his team with 17 points before Stanislaus State lose for the eighth straight time to drop to 6-20 overall and 3-16 in conference play.
For the rebuilding program, Ragsdale is a good place to start.
Against CSUMB, Ragsdale shot 7 of 9 from the field and three of four from three-point distance. The rest of the team was 17 for 49 shooting (and 5 for 18 from the arc).
Kaelen Mitchell scored 10 points and
Vondel Faniel chipped in nine. Faniel also led the team in rebounding with eight while
Kyle Gouveia pulled seven boards. Both Mitchell and Gouveia are juniors.
Since becoming a starter, Ragsdale has scored in double digits 12 times (in 17 games) while averaging better than 12.5 points a game, which is a team-best during this stretch. He's also one of the best free throw shooters in the CCAA at 86 percent (54-for-63).
Friday night at The Kelp Bed, the Warriors took off on a 13-3 lead to start the game. However, CSUMB (4-21, 2-17 CCAA) used a 15-5 run to close the first half for a 10-point, 37-27, halftime lead.
The Warriors would get as close a one-point, 50-49, with 8:02 left on a
Richard Medina trey that capped a 7-2 run, but Stan State would score just seven points the rest of the way.
Monterey Bay closed out the game on a 16-7 run to post its second conference win. Kevin Warren led the Otters with 20 points.
The game had just 16 total points (10 against the Warriors) and Stan State never made it to the free throw line.
Stanislaus wraps up the season on Saturday at Cal State East Bay.
