Women's basketball takes down Sonoma State for perfect weekend

ROHNERT PARK — The Stanislaus State women's basketball team successfully completed a 2-0 weekend on the road — with two much needed wins to stay in the top four of the standings — as the Warriors defeated Sonoma State, 52-46, Saturday night at the Wolves' Den.

Now 12-12 overall and 10-5 in the CCAA, the Warriors remain in a tie with Cal Poly Pomona for third place. The Warriors beat San Francisco State, 64-57, Friday night to end a three-game skid. Sonoma State fell to 10-10 overall and 6-8 in league play.

Two Warriors earned double-doubles against the Seawolves with a third Warrior scoring in double digits as well. Cassidy Sanders-Curry led the team with 13 points and 13 rebounds. She also had three blocks, two assists, and one steal. Erika Larsen ended the night with 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. Reana Hardin also scored 10 points for Stan State.

The Warriors dominated on the glass, out-rebounding SSU, 48-25. They were led by Ana Burch, who had nine boards. Riley Holladay pulled seven and Hardin caught four.

Stan State came out with a slow start falling behind 14-10 at the end of the first period but came back and closed out the half on an 8-0 run to take a two-point lead (27-25) at halftime. The momentum continued in the second half as they jumped out with a 9-0 run to build a 36-25 advantage after a Holladay jumper at 3:39 in the third.

Stan State shot just 28.6 percent from the field and 72.7 percent from the free throw line. However, the Warriors were 16 of 22 on the foul line compared to SSU's 2-for-6.

The Warriors will be back at home next week with a Thursday night game against Cal State San Marcos at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
