Hot-shooting Cougars defeat Stanislaus State

TURLOCK — The CCAA's top offensive team put its accuracy on display as visiting Cal State San Marcos runs past Stanislaus State, 94-76, Thursday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.

Cal State San Marcos shot a scorching 66.7 percent from the three-point line — yes, a prolific 14 for 21 — to runaway with the game early to improve to 15-8 overall and 9-6 in the conference. The Cougars actually had a lower field goal percentage overall, at 56.1 percent. All of this against one of the better defenses in the conference.

The Warriors played good enough to win most games in this league but couldn't keep up to drop their fifth straight game in falling to 6-17, 3-13 CCAA.

Joey Bennett led all Warriors with 18 points, all of them came in the second half. He was 7 of 11 with three three-pointers for his season best since scoring 14 points on Dec. 9 against Cal State Monterey Bay. Jaelen Ragsdale netted 17 points and Kyle Gouveia had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

But it was first the sharp shooting of Joe Boyd in the first half that got the Cougars started. Boyd, who averages a double-double for the season, scored 17 points and pulled 11 rebounds to lead CSUSM. Then, CSUSM kept hitting treys — 14 of them in all from all over the floor and from eight different players. Brian Wright was 4-for-4 from distance en route to his team-best 18 points. Ethan Alvano chipped in 15 points and handed off 14 of the team's 22 assists.

CSU San Marcos led by as many as 30 points midway through the second half after a 43-27 score at the break. The Cougars opened the second half with six straight points for a 12-0 run that started in the final minute of the first half.

After a Devin Koeplin three-pointer that gave CSUSM its second 30-point lead of the game, the Warriors scored 13 unanswered points to make it 77-60 at 6:47 after a pair of Bennett three-pointers.

But the top offense — which entered the night averaging 80.6 points a game — kept draining buckets to keep the game out of reach.

The Cougars did show why they are also the worst defense in the conference, allowing 74.8 points a game. The Warriors' 76 points equal their second best total during this conference season.

Stan State has one more home game remaining — next Thursday night against Chico State — before finishing out the schedule with three road games.
