Warriors take down No. 6 Chico State in series opener

CHICO – The Stanislaus State softball team started out the weekend strong with a third victory over a nationally ranked team. The Warriors beat No. 6 Chico State 3-2 in the series opener against the Wildcats on Friday at the Wildcat Softball Field.

After taking down No. 1 Humboldt State last weekend, the Warriors can add a third prestigious victory to their portfolio. With a win and a loss added to their record, Stan State is now 11-9 overall and 7-7 in the CCAA. After starting off the day victorious, the Warriors were defeated 1-9 in six innings in the nightcap. Chico State is now 13-2 and 8-2.

Katelyn McDonald went 2-for-4 in game one with two RBI, and Alexus Martinez was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Game one was started with a single by McDonald that drove in the Warriors first run of the day. Martinez singled to left field in inning four to tie up the score, and McDonald rounded out the game by driving in Nicolette Vizcaino for the second time to score Stan State's winning run at the top of the seventh.

Kylie Ragsdale earned the win in the circle pitching all seven innings. She gave up two earned runs on seven hits, walked three, and struck out three. Ragsdale is now 6-3 in the circle.

Kristin Borst suffered the loss in game two throwing the first 3.1 innings and is now 2-2 in the circle.

After Stan State scored their only run in the top of the second, seven Wildcat runs between the third and fourth innings gave Chico State their victory in the nightcap.

Stan State and Chico State will be back at it tomorrow with another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at the Wildcat Softball Field.
