TURLOCK —
Stewart Alexander threw a complete game shutout and the Warriors once again capitalized on opponents' errors as Stanislaus State beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 7-0, in game two of Saturday's doubleheader to earn a split. The Toros edged the Warriors 2-1 in the opener in a pitching duel.
Alexander threw 126 pitches in the complete game — Stan State pitching staff's second on the day — to improve his personal record to 4-1. While not dominant, he got the outs when needed and kept the Toros from threatening. He struck out four and walked three in his strong outing while lowering his ERA to 1.14.
Stanislaus State, which improved to 16-9 overall and 6-8 in the CCAA, scored five of its runs off Cal State Dominugez Hills (6-18, 4-10 CCAA) errors in the second game. In all, the Toros committed six errors resulted in five unearned runs.
Nathan Chunn, finally healthy and playing, went 2-for-3 and drove in a run in the second that gave the Warriors' their first lead of the doubleheader.
Kert Woods drove in two scores in the game, first a sac fly in the fifth inning and another a RBI single in the eighth.
Eight out of the nine batters in the Stan State line-up had at least a hit in the nine-hit team-effort.
In game one, Joe Bresson out-dueled
Jordan Kron in the game featuring the aces. Both pitchers went the distance, each gave up an earned run and both struck out seven batters.
CSUDH scored twice in the first inning for an early 2-0 lead, but Kron settled in and kept the Toros at bay. However, the Warriors' offense struggled to get much going against Bresson except for a solo homer by
Kyle Nixon in the sixth inning. Before that Nixon bomb to center, Bresson had retired 14 consecutive batters. At one stretch, he sat 18 of 19 Warriors.
Jack Large continued his hot hitting streak, extending it to six games, with a 3-for-8 day. He is now 11-for-22 in the last six games.
These teams will play game three on Sunday to decide the series. First pitch is at Noon.
