Kert Woods's two-run single helped the Warriors complete the comeback as Stanislaus State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-3, to win the three-game series on Sunday.
After the 2-1 weekend against the Toros, Stanislaus State improved to 17-9 overall and 7-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association to keep pace with the rest of the strong CCAA North Division. The Toros fall to 6-19 and 4-11 CCAA.
Woods went 1-for-3 with a in the seventh inning that propelled the Warriors' comeback. Woods also stole two bags and scored the team's fifth run.
John Holleran went 2-for-4.
In the early part of the game, the Warriors weren't able to get much going against CSUDH starter Ethan Etchebarren. CSUDH took a 3-0 lead after four and a half innings, but the Warriors finally start to rally in the fifth.
The Warriors scored twice in the fifth on just two hits. Holleran scored on a
Charlie Gaff ground-out and
Nick Ippolito plated
Nathan Chunn on another grounder to make it 3-2 after five innings. Stan State would score three more unanswered runs in the seventh.
With two runners on and one out, Woods came up with the hit to score the go-ahead run. On a 1-1 count, Woods bounced a grounder up the middle to score
Aldo Koutsoyanopulos and Ippolito to take a 4-3 lead. Woods would score the final run on a
Kyle Nixon single.
On the mound,
Tyler Murphy came in in the fifth to relief a mildly struggling
Cody Kruip. Murphy threw two and two-thirds and gave up just one hit without yielding a run. Murphy gains the victory while
Nick Voumard picks up his seventh save of the year. Voumard threw the final two frames, getting a double-play in the eighth, to preserve the win.
The Warriors are in a log-jam in the CCAA North Standings with four teams within 2 1/2 games of each other for second place behind leader Chico State. Stan State is on the road next week, at Cal Poly Pomona, which beat Chico State on Sunday.
