Stan State sweeps CCAA power Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA — The Stanislaus State Warriors picked up two important and impressive victories on the road on Saturday with a twinbill sweep over Cal Poly Pomona at Bronco Field.

The opportunistic Warriors scattered 19 hits in the doubleheader to capitalize on 10 Cal Poly Pomona errors to win 14-7 and 4-2. Stan State, winner of four straight games, improves to 19-9 overall and 9-8 in the CCAA North in a tight divisional race.

Kyle Nixon went 4-for-9 while Aldo Koutsoyanopulos and Gino Franceschetti each had three hits in two games to lead the Stanislaus offense. The Warriors, despite hitting just .241 (against Pomona's .312 average), out-played the Broncos defensively and got enough good pitching to take the first two games of the series.

Regardless of Sunday's outcome, Stanislaus will win a CCAA series over Cal Poly Pomona for the first time since 2010.

On the mound, Jordan Kron improved to 4-1 on the season in the game-one start. He threw eight innings and gave up just one earned run on 10 hits. He fanned three batters in the outing while lowering his ERA to 1.86. In three games since his return, he's allowed just three earned runs in 24 innings.

Game two starter Cody Kruip also picked up a victory with a six-inning outing. He gave up a run on seven hits with three strikeouts to pace the pitching staff. Nick Voumard recorded two outs in the ninth for his eighth save of the season.

After jumping out on top with three runs in the first — and Pomona tying the game with three unearned runs in the second — the Warriors scored six unanswered runs to push ahead 9-3. Stan State scored five times in the fourth on five hits and two CPP errors with key RBI singles by Franceschetti and Nixon. Nixon also belted a solo homer in the fourth inning.

The Warriors scored four more runs in the ninth inning without a hit thanks to two more Broncos errors.

Nixon ended up 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Franceschetti had four RBIs in the first game.

The nightcap was much tighter. Koutsoyanopulos singled in Nathan Chunn and Charlie Gaff's double scored Koutsoyanopulos to make it 2-0 Stan State early. Koutsoyanopulos would singled in another run in the sixth to capp his 2-for-4 game. Gaff and Franceschetti also had two hits in game two.
