Warriors pull upset over No. 1 Humboldt State

TURLOCK – To start off day two of the series against Humboldt State, the Stanislaus State softball team caused a major upset, dominating the No. 1 Lumberjacks 6-2 on Saturday morning at the Warrior softball field.

For the first time in Stan State history, the Warriors beat the top team in the nation. The Warriors beat another ranked team earlier this season at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas. Stan State beat No. 18 California Baptist 3-2 on the second day of the tournament. With a win in the first game and a loss in game two (3-4), Stan State is now 10-8 overall and 6-6 in the CCAA. Suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of the Warriors, Humboldt State is 12-1, 7-1 in conference.

It was HSU's first loss of the season, snapping an 11-game winning streak and the Lumberajcks' best start since 2005.

In game one, Ruby Quiralte went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Cassidy Duke was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Makenzie Sylvester was 3-for-3, and Nicolette Vizcaino went 2-for-4.

In game one a single by Duke drove in Vizcaino to put the Warriors on the board at the bottom of the first. After which Quiralte added to the Warriors momentum hitting a homer on her first swing of her first at bat, sending in two runs to give the Warriors a 3-1 lead.

Three more runs in the sixth inning from singles by Duke and Quiralte once again gave Stan State their four-point victory over the esteemed Lumberjacks.

Kylie Ragsdale was the winning pitcher in game one pitching all seven innings. She gave up no earned runs on eight hits, with no walks and four strike outs. She now has a 5-3 record in the circle.

Megan Stacy took the loss from the circle in game two, throwing all seven innings and giving up two earned runs on eight hits, with three walks and five strike outs.

Breonna Bejaran hit a homer in game two, driving in two runs and giving the Lumberjacks their game winning score.

Stan State will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Chico State for another two-day series with doubleheaders beginning at noon on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
