TURLOCK — Once again capitalizing on opponents' errors and coming up with the big hits, the Stanislaus State baseball team dominated Sonoma State in a 14-2 rout in game one of the Saturday twinbill.
The Seawolves got even in the nightcap, taking a 3-0 seven-inning win, to even the day as the teams split the series. The Warriors are now 12-7 overall and 2-6 in the CCAA while SSU moves to 8-5, 5-3 CCAA.
Like Friday's game one, the Warriors made SSU paid for their miscues. But this time Stan State also went to work with the bats.
In all, the Warriors pounded out 16 hits to score their 14 runs. Of those hits, there were four doubles and two homers. The dingers came back-to-back, both over the tall right-field wall by lefties in the fourth inning.
With the score already 6-0 after Stan State put up that crooked number in the second inning,
Kyle Nixon belted a two-run bomb in the fourth to make it 8-0.
Jack Large hit the very next pitch also deep to right-center field to make it 9-0.
Gino Franceschetti nearly made it three-straight as he doubled to left that one-hop to the four-foot fence. Franceschetti did later come around on a
Ethan Utler double to make it 10-0.
The Warriors weren't done in the fourth. Utler came around to score on a throwing error by the SSU shortstop to cap the five-run fourth inning.
Every Warrior in the starting lineup had a least a hit with the top three in the order going 6-for-12 with four RBIs.
Kert Woods went 2-for-4,
Charlie Gaff was 2-for-3 with two runs driven in and scored twice and
John Holleran went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Franceschetti and Utler each also had two hits.
Stewart Alexander picked up the win, improving to 3-1, after working through six innings. He gave up just one earned run on six hits.
Ian Chandler earned a save tossing the final three innings. He gave up just one run on a hit.
The Warriors were limited in the nightcap by Sonoma State starter Cody Bennett. He went six strong innings and gave up just three hits. Jackson Berumen threw the final inning with two strikeouts to preserved the win for SSU.
Woods had two of the team's three hits to lead the Warriors in game two.
In the series, the Warriors scored 20 runs in the two wins on 24 hits with the Seawolves committing nine errors. In the other two games, the Warriors scored one run on seven hits with just one SSU error.
