SAN MARCOS — Somehow the Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team managed to quiet the Stan State offense as the Cougars held off the Warriors, 1-0, in the conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon.
A first half CSUSM goal held up the rest of the way as San Marcos won against the Warriors for the first time to improve to 3-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in CCAA play. The Cougars have won two straight, including a 1-0 win over California Baptist last week.
As for the Warriors, they suffered their first defeat of the year to fall to 5-1-0, 0-1-0, before heading to face No. 19 UC San Diego on Sunday.
"When you play San Marcos you know it's going to be very direct. They are going to kick it and flick it.," said head coach
Gabriel Bolton. "Bottom line today is that they played their style better than we played ours. I thought we played much better in the second half. But full credit to San Marcos, they are very organized defensively and tough to break down.'
Prior to Friday's match, Stanislaus State had averaged three goals per game after scoring nine in three matches last week. CCAA player of the week
Jade Poon, who had six goals last week, was held without a shot. As a team, Stanislaus was credited with taking six shots with four on goal.
Megan Pfrunder scored her second goal of the season in the 34th minute when she ended up with the loose ball in a congested box.
Haley Crook played all 90 minutes in net on Friday and picked up three saves.
