Warriors wrap up first preseason tournament against top tier teams

With their first preseason tournament of 2017 in the books the Stanislaus State volleyball team went 0-4 against top tier teams, losing to California Baptist and McKendree in straight sets on Saturday at the CU Arena in Irvine, Calif.

With a performance similar to Friday the Warriors fell to the Lancers 17-25, 14-25, and 15-25. Against the Bearcats Stan State decreased their point deficits, losing by only two and three points in the first two sets (22-25, 23-25, 16-25).

Against California Baptist Sara Schell led Stan State with seven kills, and was one of five Warriors with five or more digs. Schell, Grace Murphy, and Chelsey Berry each dug five, Rachel Klopfer dug six, and Breanna Cannon had seven digs. Cannon also led the crew with 20 assists.

Murphy took the lead against McKendree with nine kills and eight digs. Jordan Tilley also had eight digs, schell dug 10, and Berry led the Warriors with 13 digs. Cannon and Tilley split the offense, Cannon earning 14 assists and Tilley 11.

Similar to their play yesterday the Warriors' difficulty siding out lost them the their first match of the day. Stan State gave up four runs of four or more points against the Lancers, unable to score a run of that depth.

Against McKendree Stan State was neck and neck with the Bearcats, starting out with the lead in all three sets. In set two the Warriors held their lead until the Bearcats tied the score at 15-15 and inevitably took the set.

Lauren Hackett led California Baptist with 18 kills (.516) and Sydney Kralj ran the Lancers' offense with 35 assists. Nicci Hinderacker led the Lancers with 12 digs and McKenna Witt followed with 10 digs.

Arela Williams was the kill leader for McKendree with 12 kills and Morgan Melchert led with 27 assists. Megan Marks had six blocks, Carissa Lorenz had five blocks, and Kelly Voss led with 14 digs.

Next weekend the Warriors will be traveling to Ellensburg, Wash. to compete in the annual Division II West Region Showcase, this year hosted by Central Washington. On Thursday Stan State will have matches against Dixie State and Central Washington at three and eight p.m.
