Warriors challenge Dixie State to five sets, loss to host CWU

ELLENSBURG – On the opening day of the annual Division II West Region showcase the Stanislaus State volleyball team took home two losses against Dixie State in five sets and to Central Washington in four sets on Thursday at the Nicholson Pavilion.
 
In a close match against the Trailblazers the Warriors were defeated 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, and 11-15. After getting a late start to their second match Central Washington dominated the Warriors 25-18, 15-25, 18-25, and 16-25. Now 0-6 after day one of the tournament, the Warriors have earned their first few set victories but are still on the hunt for a match win. The Wildcats are now 4-2 in preseason.
 
Ramey Gardner dominated the net against the Trailblazers leading the match with 16 kills. Fellow outside hitter Rachel Klopfer backed her with 13 kills and Sierra Adams killed 10. Setters Breanna Cannon and Jordan Tilley split time running the offense, Cannon with 25 assists and Tilley with 22. The Warriors totaled 90 digs as a team with five players digging in double digits. Libero Chelsey Berry led with 26 digs, Cannon dug 15, Klopfer had 14 digs, Tilley dug 12, and Gardner totaled 11 digs.
 
Stan State outplayed the Trailblazers in numerous areas of the game, out digging Dixie State 90 to 80, earning four more kills than Dixie State (61-57), tallying 13 aces to the Trailblazers seven, and totaling 60 assists to the Trailblazers 53.
 
Despite their accomplishments, the Warriors gave Dixie State a total of 39 free points with 30 hitting errors and nine serving errors, ultimately giving up the win.
 
Gardner and Klopfer split responsibility of the Warriors' offense against the Wildcats totaling 12 kills each. Berry tallied 18 digs, and Cannon had 10 digs and 16 assists while Tilley led with 21 assists. Stan State was a force at the net with Rebecca Conley leading with three blocks, while Morgan Miller and Adams each had two.
 
Against the Central Washington the Warriors came out with a strong first set, winning game one with a seven point advantage. Unable to continue the momentum, Stan State tacked on 23 more hitting errors.
 
Sydney Johnson led the Trailblazers with 13 kills and Hannah Doonan followed with 10. Doonan also led her team with 24 digs.
 
Maggie McTaggart was the kill leader for the Wildcats with 14 kills. Shelby Mauritson and Kyla Morgan each had 14 digs and Gabrielle Aihara ran the offense with 25 assists. Fellow setter Niki Cook tallied 20 assits.
 
The Warriors will be back for day two of the Showcase tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. with a match against Concordia-Oregon.
