ROHNERT PARK — On a pitch where they have not had much success in program history, the current version of the Stan State Warriors battled to take down Sonoma State to post a thrilling 2-1 victory in overtime on Friday.
Sean Baird and
Desmond Madrigal connected on a brilliant goal just before the end of the first overtime period to give Stanislaus its first CCAA win of the season. The Warriors will take 3-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 CCAA records to Arcata for a match at Humboldt State on Sunday.
Entering Friday's contest, the Warriors were 1-12-2 in the last 15 tries at Seawolf Soccer Field. Today's win is Stanislaus State's second straight in Rohnert Park.
"The guys worked hard today and believed in each other. It was great to see the boys score two good goals thru the run of play," head coach
Dana Taylor said.
After some great team passing, Madrigal worked his work down to the end line and crossed it into the box for Baird's one-timer goal for the game-winner to stop the clock at 98:20.
The win is the Warriors' first since Sept. 9 against Chaminade, ending a 0-2-2 stretch since the trip to Honolulu.
Adrian Yepez scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute, which ended Stan State's scoreless streak at 539 minutes since going up 1-0 early in that Chaminade match.
Sonoma State (5-4-1, 2-2-0 CCAA) had taken a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a goal by Josh Sanchez.
Stanislaus posted the win despite being out-shot by Sonoma, 15-9.
Patrick Colombana continues to play well guarding the net, earning seven saves against the Seawolves.
