ROHNERT PARK — The Stanislaus State women's soccer team had to play from behind against 17th ranked Sonoma State and the Warriors certainly made the match exciting in the second half.
Trailing 3-0 after 52 minutes of play, the Warriors staged a furious comeback before dropping another one-goal decision, this time a 3-2 loss against the Seawolves. Stanislaus State is still looking for its first CCAA win of the season as it fell to 0-4-1 in league play (5-4-1 overall). The Warriors will look for that victory on Sunday at Humboldt State (match kicks off at 11:30 a.m.).
Gabriela Vargas and
Selia Torres scored in the second half before the Warriors suffered their third one-goal loss.
Sonoma State (9-1-0, 3-1-0 CCAA) peppered the Warriors with shots, including an 18-1 advantage in the first half. Still, the Warriors trailed just 1-0 at the break after a Madison Watts score in the 39th minute. The Seawolves went up 2-0 in the 51st minute on an Alexis Espitia goal but the Warriors gifted the home team its third score a minute later for the 3-0 count.
"Sonoma played a fanastic game and really overwhelmed us in the first half," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
Then the Warriors rallied.
At 54:22, Vargas scored from 15-yards out after a give-and-go play with
Hannah Lewandowski in front of the team bench. It was Vargas' second goal of the season. Then, in the 84th minute, sisters
Bella Rivera and
Ilena Rivera hooked up on a play with Bella's pass through traffic to find Ilena in the box. Ilena got tangled up with SSU goalkeeper Kristen Spear but was able to touch the ball to Torres, who easily scored to make it 3-2.
Stan State would have a couple of chances in the final minutes of the contests but those shots went high.
"I am really proud of our effort and the quality of play in the second half. We acted like Warriors," added Bolton.
In the end Sonoma State out-shot Stanislaus, 25-5 (9-2 on goal).
Haley Crook finished with six saves.
