TURLOCK – Breaking a three-game losing streak, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team's aggressive offense helped them to a defeat over Sonoma State 79-64 at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
With another victory in their pocket the Warriors are now 4-7 in the conference and 7-10 overall. The Seawolves have fallen to 2-7 in the CCAA and 5-8 overall.
Lizzy Alexander led Stan State's offense with 18 points, going 6-for-15 from the field.
Zahria Hendrix wasn't far behind, scoring 16 points and going 6-for-9 from the field. Also in double digit scoring,
Angelica Baylon scored 12 points. Alexander and Hendrix each had four assists to lead the team, and
Kyanna Davis tallied three assists.
Under the basket
Erika Larsen led with 10 rebounds, four offensively and six defensively. Davis was also aggressive at the hoop with seven rebounds, and Alexander and Hendrix each had five rebounds.
As a team the Warriors shot 48.1 percent from the field, their second best shooting percentage this season. They also shot 45.5 percent from the three-point arc and 65.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Stan State started the game slow, putting their first point on the board more than three and a half minutes into the first quarter. The Warriors remained neck and neck with the Seawolves before Hendrix banked a buzzer beating layup to finish the first period(16-14).
The Stan State women took off at the start of the second quarter, scoring nine points before SSU was able to make a basket. The Warriors scored 25 points in the second period while Sonoma State was only able to add 13 points to their total, giving Stan State a 41-27 lead heading into half time.
Stan State was able to increase their lead to 17 points twice during the third quarter, but ended the period up 60-46 after both teams scored exactly 19 points during the quarter.
In the final period Stan State briefly let SSU creep back into the game, with a series of layups putting the Seawolves just nine points behind the Warriors (68-59). With Sonoma desperate to slow things down, an abundance of Sonoma State fouls allowed Stan State to go 11-for-14 from the free throw line in the final minutes of the game.
Ugochi Anudokem and Jessica Mitz led the Seawolves' offense with 15 points each, and Anudokem was also SSU's leading rebounder with 11 rebounds. Sonoma State shot 39.7 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from the three-point arc, and 72.7 percent from the free-throw line.
After a brief intermission with this weekend off, the Warriors will be on the road next week to take on the conference leading Tritons of UC San Diego, and Cal State San Marcos next Thursday and Saturday.
