Warriors suffer loss against Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS - Hoping to feed off of Thursday night's victory the Stanislaus State women's basketball team played a tough game against Cal State San Marcos, but were unable to earn the win in the end falling 71-81 at The Sports Center on Saturday night. 

The Warriors are now 8-11 overall and 5-7 in the CCAA, while the Cougars have advanced to 5-10 and 5-6 in the conference.

Erika Larsen was Stan State's top player against Cal State San Marcos, leading in both points and rebounds. She scored 15 points, Kyanna Davis scored 13 points, and Angelica Baylon scored 12 points.

Just short of a double-double, Larsen had nine rebounds, and Cameo Warren had six rebounds. Warren and Zahria Hendrix each had three steals, and five more Warriors had two steals apiece. 

Stan State dominated the Cougars with 16 steals as a team while CSUSM had a mere eight steals. 

The Warriors shot 34.9 percent from the field as a team, shooting only 16.7 percent from behind the three-point arc. Going 24-for-32, Stan State shot 75 percent from behind the free-throw line. 

The Warriors got off to a rocky start as the Cougars banked three shots to take a six-point lead before the Stan Statewas able to put a point on the board. After a few minutes of back and forth play the Warriors were able to fight their way back and eventually take the lead. A Cougar three-pointer in the final second of the quarter put CSUSM back into the lead to end the period (15-16).

Cal State San Marcos pulled ahead in the second quarter, scoring 22 points while Stan State was only able to score 15. There were eight lead changes in the first five minutes before CSUSM dove ahead, earning an eight-point lead before half time (30-38). 

After the intermission the Warriors were unable to recapture the advantage as Cal State San Marcos pushed them further and further behind. Stan State fought their way to a nine-point deficit by making a series of free-throws, but the Cougars maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the quarter, finishing at 46-60. 

The Warriors outscored the Cougars 25-21 in the fourth quarter, but it unfortunately was not enough. Stan State came within six points of CSU San Marcos on multiple occasions during the fourth, but consistent free-throw shooting by CSUSM kept the Warriors at bay.

Savannah Camp led the Cougars with 26 points and Juliet Jones scored 22 points. Lupe Cruz was CSUSM's leading rebounder with eight rebounds, and four more Cougars had four rebounds each. As a team Cal State San Marcos shot 46.9 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from the three-point arc, and 78.1 percent from the free-throw line. 

Stan State will have a single game next week, hosting San Francisco State at Ed & Fitzpatrick Arena on Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
