TURLOCK – Despite
Kyanna Davis' double-double and Stanislaus State's aggressive defensive game, the Warrior women's basketball team fell to San Francisco State 61-69 on Saturday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
The Warriors are now 8-12 overall and 5-9 in the conference, while SFSU has advanced to 5-13 and 3-12 in the CCAA with their third conference win.
Lizzy Alexander led the Warriors' scoring efforts with 13 points, and both Davis and
Caitlin Keding each had 12 points. Davis earned the first double-double of her career against the Gators with 10 rebounds to lead Stan State.
Erika Larsen had seven rebounds and both Alexander and
Brittney Livingston each had five rebounds.
Angelica Baylon led the Warriors with five assists and five steals, and Davis added on three steals for her team. The Warriors out-played the Gators on defense with 14 steals to six SFSU steals.
As a team Stan State shot a mere 29 percent from the field and 25.9 percent from the there-point arc. They had a successful night at the free-throw line shooting 87.5 percent as a team.
The Warriors got off to a slow start, making only four shots from the field (4-for-14) in the first quarter. Not a single shot was made by either team for almost four minutes, until the Gators were able to put themselves on the board. No shots were made in the final minute of the period, sending Stan State into the second quarter down by two points (12-14).
Again in the second period San Francisco State out-scored the Warriors by two points (19-21), keeping hold of the lead in the end. Stan State momentarily pulled ahead (22-21) as they banked two layups and a three-pointer, but two San Francisco free-throws and a three-pointer put the Warriors back in the hole.
Stan State struggled in the third, almost making their way to a double-digit deficit (38-47). A layup and free-throw from Larsen, two free-throws by Davis, and an Alexander three-pointer put the Warriors back in the game, ending the quarter just three behind (46-49).
Stan State was unable to work their way back into the game, falling behind by six points quickly into the fourth quarter. Consecutive layups by Davis put the Warriors within two points of the Gators (50-52), but they struggled to capitalize on the momentum. A series of made free-throws by SFSU gave them the eight-point lead that would eventually win them the game.
Jhaina Stephens led the Gators offense with 18 points and Rachel Iozzia score 17 points. Stephens also led the game with 14 rebounds, and Tyiteyana Jefferson had 11 rebounds. Jefferson tagged on five assists as well. As a team San Francisco State shot 45.6 percent from the field, 47.1 percent from the three-point arc, and a mere 50 percent from the free-throw line.
The Warriors will be on the road next weekend with games against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. Stan State will play the Broncos on Thursday and the Coyotes on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
