Warriors fall to Cal Poly Pomona on the road

POMONA – Starting off their weekend differently than they had hoped, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team lost to Cal Poly Pomona 57-77 on Thursday night at the Kellogg Arena.

Unable to reverse their luck the Warriors are now 8-13 overall and 5-9 in the CCAA. The Broncos have advanced to 14-7 and 11-5 in the conference.

Maintaining their roles as major leaders for Stan State, Brittney Livingston and Lizzy Alexander led the Warriors in every aspect on the court against CPP. Livingston was the top scorer for Stan State with 17 points, just five short of her personal best. Alexander scored 13 points and Angelica Baylon was also in the double digits with 10 points.

Livingston led with six rebounds alongside Caitlin Keding who also had six rebounds. Alexander was close behind with five rebounds for the Warriors. She also led with three assists, and Livingston led with four steals.

Having a rough night on offense the Warriors shot 22.8 percent from the field, 17.6 percent from the three-point arc, and 58.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Stan State came out with a slow start against the Broncos, falling significantly behind just a few minutes into the first quarter. The Warriors were only able to score five baskets to total eight points in the first period, while Cal Poly Pomona put 25 points on the board.

Scoring 20 points in the second, Stan State was able to get a rhythm going, but not enough to close the point-gap they'd created at the beginning of the game (28-43). Patterns continued in the third quarter as CPP maintained their shooting efficiency and the Warriors struggled from the field.

Heading into the final quarter with 20 points to tie up the game (39-59), the Warriors continued to take shots but weren't able to earn any point runs. Even while the Broncos had a surplus of turnovers, their numbers at the hoop were superior to Stan State's, allowing them to keep the lead for the entirety of the game and eventually take the win.

Alyssa Benton led Cal Poly Pomona with 22 points, and two other Broncos scored in the double-digits. Jackie Ricketson led the game with 14 rebounds and Chelsea Waddy-Blow had 10 rebounds. As a team the Broncos shot 31.6 percent from the field, 50 percent from the three-point arc, and 95.5 percent from the free-throw line.

After one day to rest the Warriors will hit the court again on Saturday. Stan State will take on Cal State San Bernardino at 5:30 p.m.
