Warrior women drop heartbreaker in final seconds to Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD — The Warriors were two seconds away from stealing a victory at the Pioneer Gym, where Cal State East Bay had an unblemished record this season.

But Elayshia Woodlridge drained a three-pointer as time expired to lift the Pioneers over Stanislaus State, 73-71, to remain undefeated at home. Cal State East Bay improved to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA and is now 5-0 at home.

Stan State lost the heartbreaker despite another outstanding night by Lizzy Alexander. Alexander scored 27 points, surpassing her previous career high set last week of 21, but the Warriors dropped their third straight to fall to 6-10 and 3-7.

The Warriors were just seconds away from a great win.

Alexander's layup with 18 seconds left had given Stan State a 71-70 lead in a second half that was tightly contested. Neither team led by more than five points — East Bay led 47-42 on a Kayla Blair 3-pointer with 5:40 in the third quarter.

Stan State controlled the game early, running out to a 10-2 lead to start the game and led by as many as 14 points after a pair of Alexander free throws with 4:30 left to play in the first half.

Alexander notched her career-high 27 — the most by a Warrior since Cassidy Sanders-Curry scored 28 on Feb. 9, 2017 — by hitting on 9 of 15 shots. She nailed five three-pointers (on nine tries) and was 4-for-4 at the foul line. Alexander also pulled seven rebounds, blocked a shot, made two steals and dished two assists.

Zahria Hendrix added 13 points with six assists and Brittney Livingston scored 11 points with five rebounds. Erika Larsen led the team with eight rebounds.

The Warriors made a season-best 12 three-pointers, on 22 attempts, for 54.5 percent.
