Francois's double-double performance leads Warriors over Holy Names

TURLOCK — Xavier Francois scored a career-high 18 points while earning his second double-double of his Stan State career as he led the Warriors over Holy Names, 82-58, Tuesday night in a non-conference game.

Three other Warriors also scored in double figures as Stanislaus State improved to 11-6 during their CCAA bye-week.

Caleb Baskett and Vida Faniel each scored 12 points and Kaelen Mitchell added 10 as the Warriors collectively shot 50 percent on the night to get past the 80-point mark for the second time in three games.

Stan State posted a 26-point win last Thursday, 83-57, at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Francois also pulled 11 rebounds for his second double-double. He had 17 points and 15 rebounds on Dec. 16 at Cal Maritime. Tuesday night, Francois missed just one field goal try — a three-point attempt — on 8 of 9 shooting. He made two free throws on four chances and four of his team-best 11 rebounds were offensive.

After a slow start — Holy Names scored the first five points and had an 8-4 lead — the Warriors eventually found their groove. With the game tied at 17-17, the Warriors went on a 12-1 run, started by a Andy Cleaves dunk and capped by four straight points by Baskett, for a 27-18 lead.

Stan State used an 8-0 run to close out the first half for a 37-23 halftime lead. The Warriors led by as many as 29 points (80-51) late in the game — on a Jordan Santa Maria jumper with 2:09 to play.

Every Warrior in uniform saw at least five minutes of playing time, including Parker Griffin, who scored four points.

Stanislaus held its opponents to a season-low 27.9 percent shooting. Holy Names shot just 17 of 61 overall and 6 of 28 (21.4 percent) from distance. HNU did make 18 free throws (21 attempts).

Holy Names (7-10) was led by Jewels Sanders with 17 points.

Cleaves snapped his double-digit scoring streak at six games with eight points. He did made two free throws to extend his consecutive streak to 20. Ty Davis added six more assists to his resumé. He now has six games with six or more assists.

The Warriors are off until Jan. 18 when they travel to take on UC San Diego.
