TURLOCK — Sometimes you need a lot of luck in soccer — and that luck was on Sonoma State's side on Sunday as the Warriors were unfortunate to drop a 2-1 decision in double overtime.
Many near misses for Stanislaus State resulted in the No. 25 ranked Seawolves finding a way to win when Julia Pritchard scored the winner with 1:51 left on the clock in the second extra period.
Stan State had great looks with regulation winding down and had chances in the first OT before falling to 7-5-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the CCAA.
The Warriors held a 1-0 lead since six minutes into the contest when
Sadie Ortiz got the quick goal. Stan State continued to control the pace and definitely out-played the ranked team on the day.
Sonoma State (9-2-3, 7-2-1 CCAA) tied the match in the 79th minute on an unassisted goal by Sam Layman, who won control of the loose ball in front of Stan State keeper
Haley Crook.
Ortiz nearly won the match as time was running out in regulation. With speed and expert ball handing skills, Ortiz beat two defenders and managed to take a shot from just inside the box. The try sailed just a foot wide-left of the goal as time expired.
During the first OT,
Summer England nearly scored her second golden boot goal in as many matches in the 93rd minute. After a
Kinsey Pettigrew-Taa try, England again took a blast at the net, but was saved by a leaping Kristen Spear.
Micaela Brewer had a great chance after a 2-on-1 play with Ortiz but her attempt went high.
Then, SSU scored on its only shot attempt since the 84th minute on a Bella Amyx through ball to Pritchard to end the match.
