Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stan State played Chico State tough before one-goal loss

TURLOCK — One streak had to end and the other extended. Unfortunately for the Warriors, their run was the one that ended as visiting Chico State was just one-goal better Wednesday night.

Against one of the top teams in the conference — Chico State is now just one point behind leader Cal State L.A. — the rebuilding Stan State team held its own before the 1-0 setback on a chilly evening. The Warriors saw their three-game winning streak end while Chico State stretched its streak to four.

A well-timed diving header goal by Matt Hafizi in the 44th minute was the only score of the match as Chico State improved to 10-3-1 overall and 7-2-0 in CCAA play.

The Warriors are 6-8-0 and 2-7-0 CCAA, but from the way they played Wednesday night, you'd thought they have more than two conference wins.

That's because Stan State has now dropped six one-goal matches, five of them against conference foes.

Still, the Warriors had their chances against Chico State. It took Wildcat goalkeeper Damion Lewis coming up with some nice saves to keep Stanislaus off the board. In the end, Lewis, one of the CCAA leaders, had three saves.

Stanislaus out-shot Chico State, 10-7, but was whistled for 24 fouls (against 11 for the Wildcats).
