Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors resilient in one-goal loss to 17th ranked UC San Diego

TURLOCK — Without sounding like a broken record, the Stanislaus State men's soccer team loss another one-goal contest. This time, against 17th ranked UC San Diego, 2-1 at Warrior Stadium Thursday night.

In a sport where one goal could decide the outcome, the Warriors have now suffered such narrow defeat seven times during the 2018 season. Stan State is now 6-10-0 overall and 2-8-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Warriors will wrap up the campaign on Saturday, on Senior Day, when they host Cal State San Marcos in the season finale.

On Thursday night, though, the Warriors again held their own against one of the best teams not only in the West but in the country. They battled the Tritons to a scoreless tie for the first 54-plus minutes of the contest.

But Kiefer Cooksey took care of the draw in the 55th minute to make it 1-0 and then Andy Sartor collected a pass at midfield and raced to the far side, juked a Warrior defender and sped past more Warriors to send a blast into the net for the 2-0 lead.

Stanislaus answered in the 86th minute on a beauty of a goal by Javier Ceballos. He got a long ball from Arturo Meza-Santiago and ran into the box for the shot.

The total tallies were lopsided in many areas, however. UC San Diego took 12 corner kicks to Stan State's five. The Warriors were whistled for 20 fouls against UCSD's seven. Stan State also had three yellow cards.

The shot count was nearly equal, 8-7 in favor of UC San Diego, which improved to 13-2-2, 7-2-2.

Saturday, nine Warriors will play their final home game at Warrior Stadium when they host Cal State San Marcos. Game time is at 2 p.m.
