LA JOLLA — UC San Diego was playing for the top spot while Stanislaus State was playing for its playoff lives.
In the end, it was the visiting Tritons, ranked No. 6 in the latest Division II poll, who got their wish as UC San Diego took a 3-0 victory over the Warriors Thursday night.
UC San Diego clinched the top spot in the standings — thus the No. 1 seed in the upcoming CCAA Championships that it is hosting in La Jolla. The Tritons extended their winning streak to six matches while upping their records to 15-1-1, 10-1-0.
As for the Warriors, they found out in pre-game that Cal State L.A.'s 1-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona ended their hopes of returning to the CCAA tournament. It marked the second consecutive year that Stan State will miss the postseason party after qualifying for seven straight times.
Still, when the Warriors host Cal State San Marcos on Senior Day Saturday, they have something else to play for. A win over the Cougars would give the Warriors their 12th consecutive winning season. Stan State is now 7-7-3 overall.
In Thursday night's game, Kelsey Kimball scored a header from a corner kick in the 25th minute to give UCSD a 1-0 lead. Mary Reilly scored her CCAA leading 13th goal in the 49th minute. Then Megumi Barber sealed the deal for the Tritons with her score in the 67th minute.
Seven Warriors will be recognized in a pregame ceremony as they will be playing in their final game. Kickoff against CSUSM is at 11:30 a.m.
Cal State San Marcos handed UC San Diego its only loss this season back on Oct. 3 in San Marcos.
