DENVER — Nationally ranked Regis out-shot and out-played the Warriors all over the court as the host Rangers held-off Stanislaus State, 91-78, Saturday afternoon at Mile High.
Playing their fifth game — all away — in eight days and back-to-back days at 5,280-feet elevation, the Warriors ran out of gas in the second half in their first defeat of the season. Stan State will return from Colorado with a 1-1 trip after a great overtime win over Metro State on Friday.
Next up for Stan State will finally be a home game as the Warriors host Fresno Pacific Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Saturday at Regis (2-1) the Warriors held tough and battled the reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions until midway in the second half. Stan State got within seven points but a couple of empty possessions allowed the Rangers to pull away late.
Ty Davis scored 17 points with five rebounds and five assists to lead the Warriors for the second straight game. He had 24 points Friday at Metro State.
Vasilije Saraba scored 15 and
Andy Cleaves added 14.
Joseph Alvarez led with seven rebounds.
The Warriors were out-shot by a high-flying offense. On its home court, Regis shot 48.3 percent from the floor and made half of its three-point attempts (13-for-26). They were also 22 of 25 at the foul line. Despite all of that, Stan State stayed in the game with extra possessions by only committing just one turnover in the first half. The Warriors ended up with just nine turnovers.
Jarrett Brodbeck, a potential RMAC player of the year, led with 24 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the arch. Christian Little (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Ryan Beisty (14 points, 10 rebounds) both had double-doubles.
