LOS ANGELES — The Stanislaus State Warriors could not stop a hot shooting Golden Eagles team as host Cal State L.A. defeated the visitors 94-83 in a high scoring Saturday matinee.
Andy Cleaves scored 21 points and
Vasilije Saraba added 19, but Cal State L.A. improved to 3-3 overall in the California Collegiate Athletics Association opener for both teams. Devin Means scored 23 to lead a quartet of double-digit scorers for L.A.
Cal State L.A. shot 57.6 percent in the first half but managed a four-point, 48-44, lead at halftime. The Golden Eagles then pulled away in the second half by shooting 48.5 percent against the Warriors' 37.5 percent from the field.
The Warriors (3-2, 0-1) led briefly, by three points, in the first half and as late as 18-15, but a 15-0 L.A. run gave Stan State a 12-point deficit it never really was able to fully recover from.
Stan State did get within seven after intermission, but the Golden Eagles led by as many as 17 points halfway through the second half.
Cleaves' 21 points was a season high and his fourth double-digit scoring game in five contests. He was 7 of 14 from the field and made four of six three-point tries. He also led the team with eight rebounds. Saraba scored 19 with seven from the free throw line and
Ty Davis had 18 with eight from the foul line.
Stanislaus as a team was 20 of 27 from the charity stripe.
The Warriors will finally play a home game next week when Sonoma State visits Thursday night. Cal Poly Pomona will be in Turlock on Saturday.
