Sonoma State wins overtime game on the foul line over Stan State

TURLOCK — In a game with a lot of whistles, the one the entire Warrior Nation wanted didn't happen as visiting Sonoma State escapes Fitzpatrick Arena with a 76-72 overtime win over Stanislaus State in a wild, wild finish Thursday night.

Trailing by two points with eight seconds left in overtime, the Warriors got the turnover and the breakaway lay-up they wished for. However, Vasilije Saraba's attempt did not go in as a Sonoma State defender appeared to hack the junior forward. The no-call led to a lot more yelling and a lot of unhappy Warriors before SSU made two more free throws to end the game.

A total of 50 fouls were called which led to Sonoma State going 30 for 36 at the charity stripe. The Seawolves made all seven free throws awarded in the extra period. The Warriors were just 15 of 24 from the free throw line.

Still, the Warriors had the upper-hand leading by eight, 56-48, with six minutes left to play in regulation after a Mat Bradshaw three-pointer from the corner. Using six points from the free throw line in the final minutes, Sonoma State rallied back. A running jumper by Armani Nicols with 23 seconds left tied the game.

Stanislaus State couldn't recover from a bad shooting first half. The Warriors hovered around the 20 percent shooting mark for most of the first 20 minutes to end up 7 of 27. Still, they trailed only by seven, 29-22, at the break.

The Warriors made a run to start the second half, hitting their first three shots en route to a 57.7 percent shooting second period. Stan State outscored SSU, 41-34 in the second 20 minutes.

Andy Cleaves led all players with 17 points and Darius Scott chipped in 14. Scott and Cleaves each also had game-high seven rebounds. Ty Davis scored nine, but had eight assists with four steals. Saraba had an off-night shooting, hitting just 3 of 13 tries for 11 points — five of which came at the line.

From the three-point arch, the Warriors were at exact their season average, converting 7 of 22 tries.

Six Seawolves (5-2, 3-0 CCAA) scored double digits with Isaac Davidson the leader with 15 points.

Stan State, now 3-3, 0-2 CCAA, will have to face 7th ranked Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night. The Broncos beat San Francisco State, 78-71, to improve to 3-0, 1-0.
