TURLOCK — A flurry of three pointers late in the game and in overtime resulted in another Stanislaus State upset over a nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona team as the Warriors beat the No. 7 Broncos, 78-71, Saturday night.
Darius Scott made two three-pointers in the final 78 seconds of regulation to sent the game into overtime. Then triples by
Vasilije Saraba and
Andy Cleaves in extra time led to the upset.
Stanislaus State improved to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. It is the second consecutive time that the Warriors upset a ranked Cal Poly Pomona team. Last February, the Warriors upended the 19th ranked Broncos, 62-58, in Pomona.
Saturday night's upset was also made possible because of a poor shooting night by Cal Poly Pomona, which suffered its first loss of the season and is now 3-1, 1-1 CCAA. The Broncos shot just 38.5 percent from the field, and just 31 percent in the first half. They finished 9 of 30 from the 3-point arch.
The Warriors, on the other hand, shot 50 percent on the night and nailed nine three-pointers on 24 tries. They made five of their last six three-point attempts to pull out the win.
Scott made a NBA range three-pointer with 1:18 left to pull the Warriors within three at 60-57. A Pomona turnover later, Scott made another three-pointer from the wing to tie the game with 33 seconds remaining.
Again trailing by two in OT, Saraba nailed a trey with 2:45 left to take the lead for good. Cleaves followed with another long bomb in the ensuing possession to pull ahead. The Broncos did answer with a Riley Schaefer three-pointer, but two free throws and another three-pointer by Saraba put the Warriors up 72-66 with 37 ticks left.
Cleaves finished with 21 points on 8 of 18 shooting. He also had three steals.
Darius Scott finished with three three-pointers for 17 points.
Ty Davis scored 13, dished seven assists and grabbed five rebounds. Saraba scored all of his 10 points in overtime.
