TURLOCK –The Warriors entered Thursday night's game with high energy as they took on the Sonoma State Seawolves. Stan State beat the Seawolves in its home opener 59-49, snapping a three-game losing streak. The Stanislaus State women's basketball team's aggressive defense led them to victory.
This first victory will make the Warriors 1-1 in conference and 1-3 overall. The Seawolves now fall to 1-2 in conference and 3-3 overall.
Angelica Baylon led Stan State's offense with 15 points and seven assists.
Caitlin Keding was behind Baylon with 11 points and was also second in rebounds with six.
Alexus Kelly led with eight rebounds.
Caprina Pipion was a great defensive player with a total of eight steals.
The Warriors went without a missed free throw throughout the entire match but only had five attempts. The women's field goal percentage improved from 30 percent in the first half to 50 percent in the second, helping them to outscore SSU 36-25 in the second half.
The women took off at the beginning of the game falling behind in the second quarter, but they were able to pick up their momentum in the last half of the game eventually leading by 12.
Ugochi Anudokem led the Seawolves with 15 points and six rebounds. Zane Sheckherd led with eight rebounds. Kylie Kiech scored 11.
Both teams were neck and neck at the close of each quarter only having a spread of one point at the end of the first three, until the Warriors were able to gain a lead in the fourth and close out the game.
The Warriors will be back at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena on Saturday, December 1, to take on the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos at 5:30 p.m.
