Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stan State dominated the boards to beat Cal State East Bay, 66-56

TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State men's basketball team completely controlled the paint with rebounds and lay-ups as the Warriors defeated Cal State East Bay, 66-56, Thursday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

Kyle Gouveia grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and Vida Faniel led all players with 21 points as the Warriors snapped a three-game slide to improve to 16-11, 11-10 CCAA.

The Warriors move to a tied for sixth place with Cal State San Bernardino heading into Saturday's regular season finale to jockey for tournament seeding. Stanislaus State had already clinch a berth into the CCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Gouveia also had 10 points for his ninth career double-double. He surpassed his previous rebound best of 15 set Jan. 7, 2017 against San Francisco State. He and the Warriors out-rebounded the Pioneers (10-18, 6-16 CCAA) 52-23 for the game — their best margin this season. It was also the third time this year that they out-rebounded an opponent by 20 or more.

The rebounds included 17 offensive boards which led to 14 second chance points. In all, the Warriors scored 30 of their 66 points in the paint. Cal State East Bay had just one offensive rebound.

As for Faniel, he got to his 21 points by shooting 8 of 14 with three three-pointers. He was also 2-for-2 from the foul line, tying the Stan State record for consecutive free throws made at 33. He added six boards, four assists and two steals for a great well-rounded game.

Faniel now has 312 points this season, joining Andy Cleaves in the 300-point club. This is the first time two Warriors scored more than 300 points in a season since 2013-14.

Also starred on the night was Cleaves with 17 points (7 for 14) and Ty Davis with nine assists and eight rebounds. Davis now has 125 assists this season, the most in a season by a Warrior since Sam Marcus posted 141 in 2013-14. The 125 total is also the second most since the 2003-04 season.
