Stan State, SF State split Saturday doubleheader

SAN FRANCISCO — The Stanislaus State baseball team scored three times in the seventh, including two unearned runs, to win the nightcap, 4-2, of Saturday's doubleheader at San Francisco State.

The Warriors lost the opener 4-3 earlier on the day and are now 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Chase Wheatcroft recorded his sixth save in as many chances in game two with Kevin Hahn earning the win on the mound.

Ethan Utler and Andrew Renteria each had RBI hits in the seventh and both ended up with two hits to lead the offense.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the seventh and final inning of the nightcap, the Warriors started the rally when Nathaniel Thompson was nailed by a pitch. One out later, Renteria doubled to score Thompson who had moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a balk.

With two outs, an errant throw by the Gator pitcher, who was fielding a squeeze bunt, allowed Renteria to score. Stan State went up 4-2 after back to back singles by Jack Large and Utler.

In game one, Braeden Oki went 4-for-4 and Utler was 2-for-4 as the Warriors out-hit SF State, 9-5.

The Warriors will go for the series win on Sunday in the finale set for an 11 a.m. start.
