SAN FRANCISCO —
Jarrett Veiga homered and ended up as the winning pitcher and
Chase Wheatcroft closed out another game as Stanislaus State scored in its final at-bat to beat San Francisco State, 3-2, in Sunday's series finale.
The Warriors improved to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association after playing in yet another close game. Stan State has now been involved in games decided by two runs or less in all six conference games. In fact, the Warriors have been in games decided by two runs or less in 11 of the 12 games so far.
Andrew Renteria's single through the left side scored
John Holleran from second as the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. Holleran had reached with two outs when he was hit by a pitch. He then stolen second ahead of a
Brandon De La Guardia walk.
Holleran's run had answered SF State's game trying score in the eighth off of Warrior reliever Veiga, who earned his second win on the mound.
Wheatcroft pitched another perfect ninth to record his seventh save in as many chances. Wheatcroft saved all three wins in this series.
Veiga also supplied the offense, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the fourth that gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
Braeden Oki went 2-for-3 with a double and was 9 for 15 with five runs in the series.
Grant Vogenthaler got the loss for San Francisco State (3-10, 3-5 CCAA).
