Warriors fall to Chico State in close game, 64-67

TURLOCK – As the gym filled with the largest crowd it has seen all season, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team fell in a close game to Chico State 64-67 on Thursday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
 
The Warriors are now 9-14 overall and 6-11 in the CCAA, while the Wildcats have advanced to 13-9 and 11-7 in conference play.
 
Kyanna Davis led Stan State with 15 points and Angelica Baylon followed with 10 points. Lizzy Alexander and Britney Livingston each had nine points and Caitlin Keding scored seven.
 
The Warriors rebounding efforts were spread amongst the team with six players grabbing four or more rebounds. Davis, Erika Larsen, and Zahria Hendrix each had five rebounds while Alexander, Caprina Pipion, and Cameo Warren had four rebounds apiece.
 
Baylon and Livingston each had four steals and Hendrix stole three. Stan State totaled 20 steals as a team while the Wildcats gave up 31 turnovers.

As a team the Warriors shot 29.2 percent from the field, a mere 15.8 percent from the three-point arc, and 86.4 percent from the three-point line.  
 
To start the game the Warriors trailed behind for most of the first quarter. In the final two minutes Stan State stole the lead and won the first period 19-16. The Warriors didn't maintain the lead for long as Chico State made two shots to put themselves ahead in the second (19-20). The Wildcats flew further ahead with a jumper and two three-pointers (21-28), and four free-throws gave them a nine-point lead to head into half time.
 
After the inter­­mission the Warriors fell behind by 11 points (29-40), and weren't able to push their way back into the game until the fourth quarter. Stan State came within a single point of the Wildcats (51-52) and were just a few shots short of tying the game in the last minute of the period. However, for every shot the Warriors made, Chico made one as well to secure them the win.
 
Whitney Branham led the Wildcats with 22 points and McKena Barker scored 18 points. Barker led with 13 rebounds and Branham and Kayla Taylor each had seven rebounds. Madison Wong led the Wildcats with six assists. Chico State shot 48.9 percent from the field, 40 percent from the three-point arc, and 70.8 percent from the free-throw line.
 
The Warriors will be back at Fitzpatrick Arena on Saturday night to host Humboldt State for another CCAA matchup at 5:30 p.m.
