Aliyah Garvin hits grand slam to help Warriors win home opener 9-1

TURLOCK — Friday night at the Warrior Softball Field the Stanislaus State softball team made an impressive home debut as they defeated Holy Names 9-1 in just five innings.

With the victory adding to their record, the Warriors are now 4-2 overall. It was Holy Names' season opener.

The entire Stan State squad was hot at the plate with a total of 10 hits in just four innings. Freshman Aliyah Garvin had an excellent first game on home field, going 2-for-3 at the plate and hitting a grand slam to collect four RBIs.

Fellow freshman Maya Yoshiura was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in. Desiree Gonzalez and Katelyn McDonald each drove in a score to round-out the Warriors' total. Bryanna Menor also made an impression at the plate, hitting a double in the second inning.

The Warriors started the game off strong, plating two runs in each of the first and second innings. Gonzalez had a RBI single to right and McDonald drove in a run on a sacrifice fly tin the first inning. In the second, Yoshiura scored Menor and Deja Guzman with a single up the middle.

After Holy Names scored in the  third, Stan State answered with five runs in the home half of the third. Yoshiura singled to center field to score McDonald, then Garvin belted a grand slam down the left field line to give the Warriors a 9-1 lead. Although they weren't able to put any more runs on the board in the fourth inning, pitcher Anyssa Garvin was able to get three easy outs to end the game in the fifth.

Kylie Ragsdale earned the win to improve to 2-1 in the circle with four innings of work. She didn't give up an earned run on two hits without walking a batter.

Stan State will be back on the field on Saturday for a single non-conference game against Academy of Art. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at the Warrior Softball Field.
