TURLOCK —
Joe Ryan got some run support Friday afternoon. Lots of it.
The Stan State ace was once again on his game and this time his fellow teammates scattered 17 hits to post an 18-1 win to open the four-game series against Cal State L.A. The victory snapped the Golden Eagles eight-game winning streak.
The 18 runs is the most scored by the Warriors in a CCAA game since beating Chico State 18-4 on March 20, 2010. Stanislaus State has now won 10 of last 11 games versus Cal State L.A.
In game one of Friday's doubleheader, the Warriors jumped all-over LA starter Angel Lerma, scoring eight runs before chasing him after 2 1/3 innings. The Warriors would add three runs in the fourth and four in the seventh to blow them away.
Andrew Wheat,
Brandon De La Guardia and
Jarrett Veiga each had three hits. De La Guardia drove in five runs and
Michael Wyatt had three RBI. Wheat scored five times. Of the 17 hits, there only only two doubles.
Ryan improved to 5-1 on the season with another gem. He threw seven innings and gave up just one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts. His only mistake on the day was giving up a solo homer to Anthony Ayala in the sixth. After giving up two singles in the first (and got out of the jam with two strikeouts), he retired 14 of the next 15 batters before the Ayala homer.
Cal State L.A. bounced back and won the nightcap 7-4. Stan State committed five errors and starter
Dakota Edwards gave up seven runs, but only one earned, in three innings. Nicholas Gonzalez pitched four strong innings in relieve and gave up just one hit.
Jack Large was 2-for-4 with a double.
The series continues with a single game on Saturday, scheduled for 4 p.m.
