Warriors upset No. 7 Chico State and dominate with a 4-0 win

TURLOCK – After waiting all weekend in anticipation to challenge No. 7 Chico State, the Stanislaus State softball team created a major upset as they took down the nationally ranked Wildcats 4-0 in the one-hitter series opener on Sunday afternoon.

After the impressive victory the Warriors suffered the loss 1-2 in the nightcap and are now 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA. With their first loss of the year, the Wildcats are 18-1 and 13-1 in league.

In the opener Aliyah Garvin went 2-for-4 at the plate, hitting a double and earning two RBI. Alexus Martinez was 2-for-3, scored a run, and earned an RBI. Maya Yoshiura also had a solid game offensively going 2-for-3, and Desiree Gonzalez earned Stan State's final RBI.

The Warriors started off by scoring two runs in the second inning, first with a sacrifice bunt by Martinez. Gonzalez then singled through the right side and all three runners advanced on a Wildcat throwing error, including Stan State's third run. In the sixth inning Garvin hit a two-RBI double, also through the right side, to total out Stan State's final score.

In the nightcap Garvin, Gonzalez, Ruby Quiralte, and Katelyn McDonald each had a hit. Quiralte fouled out in the sixth inning to give Garvin the opportunity to head home and put a run on the board.

Megan Stacy earned the win in game one, maintaining her spotless 5-0 record. She pitched all seven innings giving up only a single hit and striking out six batters.

Kristin Borst suffered the lost in the nightcap pitching seven innings and giving up one earned run on six hits. Borst is now 1-2 in the circle.

Tomorrow morning the Warriors will be back at the Warrior Softball Field for another doubleheader against the Wildcats. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
