LA JOLLA — The UC San Diego Tritons won game one of the series, 3-2, Friday night in walk-off fashion, thanks to some free base runners in the ninth.
Two hit-batsmen, an intentional walk and a wild pitch set-up a single up the middle by Alex Eliopulos to end the game as UC San Diego improved to 21-13 overall and 17-12 in the CCAA.
The Warriors fell to 20-17 and 16-15 in league play but are still in the middle of the conference standings. Eight teams are all within three games of each other between second and ninth place.
Vinny Margiotta stayed hot and went 3-for-3,
Brandon De La Guardia was 2-for-4 and
Braeden Oki went 2-for-4, including a leadoff triple to lead Stan State.
Jarrett Veiga suffered the loss as he pitched the ninth. Veiga was the Warriors' third pitcher behind
Joe Ryan (7 IP, 6 hits, 2 runs, eight strikeouts) and
Cody Kruip, who pitched a scoreless eighth.
Stanislaus led 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when UCSD struck for two runs on three hits. Eliopulos drove in two runs with a double to tie the game.
The game remained 2-2 until the bottom of the ninth. A Triton was hit by pitch, moved to second on a bunt and third on a wild pitch. The Warriors elected to intentionally walk Tyler Durna. Then Zander Clarke was also hit by a pitch to load the bases — to set up the Eliopulos at bat.
Margiotta has now hit safely in six straight games when he's gone 10-for-21. In the last 10 games, he's 18-for-35, elevating his batting average from .238 to .316.
