LA JOLLA — Facing a Top 25 team for the second consecutive weekend, the up-start Stanislaus State softball team was up to the challenge before losing twice, by one run each, on the road.
No. 24 UC San Diego (27-12, 20-10 CCAA) held off the Warriors in both games of Friday's doubleheader by the scores of 3-2 and 1-0. Stanislaus State falls to 24-18 overall and 15-13 in the CCAA. The Warriors fell to fifth place behind Humboldt State, by percentage points.
After being held hitless through five innings in game one, the Warriors rallied late. Trailing 3-0 in the final inning, the resilient Warriors scored twice on four hits before a strikeout and a grounder to end the game. CCAA player of the Week Alanah Laupua doubled to start the seventh and scored on a
Ruby Quiralte single. Quirlate then scored on a single by
Katelyn McDonald to make it 3-2 with nobody out.
But UC San Diego starter Robyn Wampler got a strike out before a
Desiree Gonzalez single. With runners at first and second, Wampler fanned
Maya Yoshiura and got
Alexus Martinez to ground out to end the game. Wampler had nine strikeouts and improved to 18-6.
Game two was a pitching duel between
Megan Stacy and A. Phillips until the home half of the sixth. Stedman scored on a Woken single for the lone run of the game.
Each team managed three hits in the game. Stacy gave up the run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Kaitlyn Doyle was the only Warrior to have a hit in both games.
The teams square-off again with two more games on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
