LA JOLLA — The Stanislaus State softball team will make its trek back up the state on a high note as the Warriors handled No. 24 ranked UC San Diego on its home turf on Saturday.
The Warriors beat the Tritons 3-2 in game one and won game two, 8-0, via the mercy rule in six innings. Stanislaus State will return home with 26-18 overall and 17-13 CCAA records. With Sonoma State getting swept in Chico, the Warriors are now tied with the Seawolves for third place and are just two games behind UC San Diego (27-14, 20-12) for second.
The top four teams in the final CCAA standings will qualify for the conference tournament, May 4-6, in Stockton.
Stan State hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills (15-29, 11-21 CCAA) next weekend before the regular season completes in Seaside against Cal State Monterey Bay (22-23, 15-16).
On Saturday, the Warriors used a monstrous seven-run second inning of the series finale for the doubleheader sweep. Seven runs scored on five hits against two UCSD errors. The first four runs were scored on four hits, a walk and a hit-batsman plus two Tritons errors. Then,
Alanah Laupua-Vanisi provided the big blow with a bases clearing three-run double down the right-field line for the huge crooked number.
Bryanna Menor's single to center would score
Makenzie Sylvester in the sixth for the 8-run margin.
UC San Diego was hapless in the bottom of the sixth against
Kylie Ragsdale with two grounders and an infield pop-up to end the game.
In game one, the Warriors broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth with two runs on two bunt singles.
Karina Callazo was able to limit UCSD's comeback in the seventh to one run to preserve the victory.
Desiree Gonzalez and
Katelyn McDonald each had three hits in the twinbill. Both went 2-for-3 in the series finale.
