Broncos disappoint Warrior Nation with ninth inning comeback

TURLOCK — The Warriors were one strike away from winning their third straight Senior Day game behind a tremendous outing by senior Tyler Murphy.

That strike versus Matt Manskar didn't happen as Cal Poly Pomona scored five times in the top of the ninth to beat Stanislaus State, 6-4, to win the series three games to one. The Warriors lost three straight in this series in heartbreaking fashion and dipped to 17-21 in the CCAA (21-23 overall). While mathematically not eliminated, by going 1-7 in the last two weekend, Stan State's odds of qualifying for the postseason is getting smaller.

Cal Poly Pomona, playing for a tournament spot as well, improved to 23-19 overall and 20-16 in league play. The Broncos moved up to fourth place in the standings with four games to go.

Stan State had won on Senior Day in each of the last two seasons with wins over Cal State East Bay (2017) and Chico State (2016).

On Senior Day 2018, where the program recognized 15 Warriors playing in their final home game, Murphy had one of his best performances of his four-year career. He allowed just three hits in the first eight innings and at one point retired eight of nine batters. He had his easiest inning in the eighth on a strikeout and two infield popups.

But, Murphy got into trouble to start the ninth. He gave up a leadoff single and walked two to load the bases before head coach Kenny Leonesio turned to Kevin Hahn out of the bullpen. A fielder's choice allowed a run to score and with two outs, a single to left loaded the bases again.

On a 3-2 pitch, after a check-swing that was called a ball, Manskar lined a shot into the left-center field gap to clear the bags for three runs to take the lead at 5-4. Pomona would tagged on another run on an error for a two-run lead.

Stan State had taken a 2-0 lead in the third on a groundout and a squeeze bunt by Jarrett Veiga. The Warriors made it 3-0 in the fourth when Jack Large grounded into a double play with the bases loaded that scored Vinny Margiotta. Stanislaus scored a run on a Large double in the eighth but had two baserunners gunned down on the base paths, including at home on the Large double.

The momentum swung over to the Pomona dugout and the Broncos capitalized with the rally against the usually reliable backend of the Stan State bullpen.

Margiotta finished 2-for-3 and Braedan Oki scored twice to lead Stanislaus State's offense.

Manskar and Cody Martin each had two hits at the top of the Bronocs batting order.

The Warriors will wrap-up the 2018 regular season on the road next week with four games at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.
