SEASIDE — The drought is over. For the first time since 2009 the Stanislaus State softball team will play in the CCAA Softball Championship Tournament.
With the nightcap win during Friday's doubleheader at Cal State Monterey Bay, the Warriors improved to 22-14 in CCAA play to secure a spot in the postseason tournament to be held May 4-6 on the campus of University of the Pacific in Stockton.
The Warriors beat the Otters 2-1 behind a strong pitching performance by
Megan Stacy after Cal State Monterey Bay opened with series with a 5-0 decision. Stanislaus State's 31-19 overall record is also the program's best since 2009, when the Warriors advanced all the way to the NCAA Super Regionals.
Stanislaus State, ranked No. 7 in the latest West Region poll released on Wednesday, will join Chico State and UC San Diego as the three teams already qualified for the CCAA tournament. One more spot is up for grabs between four other teams.
UC San Diego earned its spot on Friday after its first win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
On Friday, the Warriors rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the third inning.
Bryanna Menor scored from second on an
Alexus Martinez bunt single that was also tossed away by the Otter third baseman. Martinez would scored the go-ahead run on an
Aliyah Garvin sac fly to left.
As it turned out, that was all of the run support Stacy needed . However she did run into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the third. CSUMB loaded the bases on an error, a walk and a hit-batsman. With two outs, Stacy got an infield pop-up by Haley Fein to end the inning, stranding all three baserunners.
Stacy retired 11 of the final 12 batters to improve to 11-4.
Martinez finished the nightcap with a 2-for-4 game, as did
Kaitlyn Doyle.
Desiree Gonzalez and Menor both doubled.
Fein won game one, almost single-handily for Monterey Bay (24-28, 17-21 CCAA) in game one. She threw a complete game one-hit shutout and went 3-for-3 with a RBI.
