TURLOCK —
Vinny Margiotta delivered the safely squeeze with one out in the 10th inning as the Warriors win in walk-off fashion on a bunt, beating Cal State San Marcos, 5-4, Saturday night.
The Warriors took game one of the series opener, which was delayed by 24 hours due to wet weather. Stanislaus State, winner of four of last five games, improved to 19-14 overall and 15-12 in CCAA play.
Stan State use the short game to push through the game winner in the home half of the 10th. After drawing back to back walks by
Cody Kruip and
Ethan Utler,
Brandon De La Guardia bunt the runners over in scoring position. With one out, Margiotta placed a perfect bunt between the pitcher and the first baseman to score pinch-runner
Nikko Delgado for the victory.
Braeden Oki went 4-for-5, Utler drove in two go-ahead runs in the sixth and
John Holleran went 2-for-4 to star on offense for Stan State. Margiotta also had two hits, including the game-winning infield hit.
Cal State San Marcos (13-18, 8-17 CCAA) had taken an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off Stanislaus ace
Joe Ryan. Tyler Place hit a solo homer, then a double and an error resulted in a second run.
However, Ryan settled down. He took control of the game from that point on, sitting the Cougars in order in four of the following six innings. He ended up with 11 more strikeouts on seven innings of work and gave up five hits in the no-decision.
Stan State tied the game in the third on a two-run single by
Michael Wyatt, scoring Margiotta and Oki, both singled with two outs.
CSUSM tied the game in the ninth on just two hits as the Warriors allowed some free bases. A bases loaded walk and a bunt scored the two runs.
Place ended up going 3-for-4 for San Marcos.
The series continues with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
