TURLOCK — Hit a dramatic extra-inning walk-off home run to beat a nationally ranked team. If that was on
Maya Yoshiura's to-do list, well, the freshman can check that off Sunday night.
Batting ninth in the order, with the teams locked in a 1-1 tie into the evening, Yoshiura ended the long game in the ninth with a three-run blast as Stanislaus State upset No. 25 Sonoma State, 4-1, in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Brigid Ruiz threw a two-hit shutout to help the Seawolves defeat the Warriors, 5-0, in the first game.
With the split, and other favorable results from around the CCAA, the Warriors remain in fourth place in the league standings at 14-10 (23-15 overall). Sonoma State is second in the CCAA at 24-13, 16-8.
Stanislaus State rallied with two outs in the home half of the ninth to set-up the dramatics. With two outs, Alana Laupua doubled for the second time in the game ahead of a SSU fielding error which allowed
Desiree Gonzalez to reach. Then, on the first pitch she saw from Sonoma's Brielle Vidmar, Yoshiura sent it over the fence for the walk-off victory and the split.
Alexus Martinez,
Kaitlyn Doyle, Laupua and Yoshiura each had two hits in the game.
Ruiz proved to be too much for the Warriors to handle as she allowed just two singles and cruised to the win.
