Warrior trio slams Antelope Valley for season opening victory

TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State volleyball team has a triple threat on offense.

A trio of Warriors — Sierra Adams (Silverdale, Wash./Maryland Eastern Shore), Rachel Klopfer (Las Vegas/Green Valley HS) and Yisel Perez (Turlock/Pitman HS) — led the way with double-digit kills as the NorCal Volleyball Classic hosts took down University of Antelope Valley in straight sets, 25-14, 25-22, 25-19.

Adams had 15 kills, Klopfer spiked 12 and Perez put-away 10 as the Warriors began the 2018 season with the victory. Alana Wilson-Reid (San Diego/Grossmont College) chipped in seven kills on offense as Stan State collectively hit .258 at the net.

Running the offense was Breanna Cannon (Phoenix/Pinnacle HS) who posted 34 assists with 10 digs. Klopfer also had 10 digs. Libero Chelsey Berry (Tracy/Tracy HS) impressed on defense with 20 digs.

Adams was powerful with her attacks and was a prolific .324 on 34 tries for her 15 kills. She had just four errors. Perez (10-2-23, .348) and Wilson-Reid (7-3-13, .308) also had strong attacking percentages.

The Warriors had to battle from behind in the second set after blowing the Pioneers (0-8) away in set number one. UAV took off to an early 12-4 lead in the second before Stanislaus rallied back with a 12-4 run to tie the set at 16 apiece.

Stanislaus used back to back kills by Wilson-Reid and Klopfer to gain the momentum to win set two.

Stan State again had to come from behind in the third, but a pair of kills by Jordon Wilson (Rialto/Mt. San Antonio College) gave the Warriors a 19-18 advantage.

The eight-team tournament continues on Friday with five more matches starting at 10:30 a.m. before six more contests scheduled for Saturday.
