Stan State shuts out Dominican to win season opener

ARCATA — Adrian Yepez and Ryan Kane netted goals and new goalkeeper Edgar Benitez was brilliant at the net as Stanislaus State opened the season with a 2-0 win over Dominican on Thursday at College Creek Field at Humboldt State.

Even though the Warriors literally drove through San Rafael, where Dominican is located, to get to Arcata, the match was played at Humboldt State as part of a four-team mixer.

Benitez (San Jose/California Baptist) was as good as advertised as the transfer from California Baptist stopped the penguins. He had posted a 0.59 GAA with a 15-1-2 record in 19 matches as a CBU Lancer.

Yepez (Hilmar/Hilmar HS) got the Warriors on the board in the 32nd minute on a goal assisted by Daniel Galvan (Milpitas/DeAnza College). Kane (Rocklin/American River College) made it 2-0 in the 80th minutes on an one-on-one play as he junked the Dominican goalkeeper Wyatt Walsh.

Stanislaus State out-shot Dominican, 14-9, with a 10-5 shot advantage in the second half. Nine of the 14 shots were on goal.

The Warriors will stay in Arcata to take on Holy Names on Saturday.
