TURLOCK — The 10th season of Warrior Stadium began on a high for the home team as Stanislaus State defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 2-0, Thursday night.
Sadie Ortiz (Atwater/Fresno State) scored early in the second half to break a scoreless battle then
Rayana Plancarte (Turlock/Pitman HS) knocked in the second goal with a second left to play to lead the Warriors scoring.
On defense, the Warriors held off 20 shots by NDNU with two goalkeepers —
Haley Crook (Modesto/Davis HS) and
Alyssa Herrman (Shingle Springs/Ponderosa HS) — combined for six saves to shutout the Argonauts. Herrman started the match and had two of those saves.
Ortiz scored at 50:06 on a free kick just outside of the box. With time running out, Plancarte juked a number of defenders and beat NDNU keeper Alexis Aguilar for the final score.
Notre Dame de Namur out-shot the Warriors 20-14, including a 11-6 in the second half, but came up empty. PacWest preseason player of the year pick Ellie Mujushi was held scoreless on six shots.
Thursday night's match marks the first of the season — the 10th of Warrior Stadium since it opened in 2009.
Stan State will host Central Washington Saturday night at 7 p.m. to continue the homestand.
