Ureno smashes 21, Warriors win twice at Showcase to improve to 6-0

OAKLAND — Welcome home Kaylene Ureno.

After spending two years at Santa Barbara City College, Ureno, the Pitman High School graduate, had her homecoming party on Friday as she spiked 21 kills in the Warriors' four-set thrilling victory over host Holy Names.

Stanislaus State out-lasted Holy Names, 25-20, 18-25, 25-18, 32-30, to complete a two-match sweep as the Warriors improved to 6-0 on the season. Earlier, during day one of the D2 West Region Showcase in Oakland, Stan State swept Hawaii Pacific in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19.

The Warriors improved to 6-0 on the season for the best start since 2015 when they began the year 7-0 en route to the program's first postseason appearance during the CCAA era.

Ureno's 21-kill performance was the best by a Warrior since All-American Blair Ehrlich put-away 22 on Nov. 5, 2016.  The junior outside hitter, who was part of the two-time sectional championship team at Pitman High School in Turlock, hit .447 on 38 attempts with just four errors. She also had four assisted blocks, eight digs and two assists.

Prior to Friday's contest against Holy Names, Ureno had played in just one set, against Academy of Art last weekend, with three kills.

Stan State's team depth was evident on the day. Against Holy Names, Ramey Gardner (Gresham, Ore./Texas A&M International) had 11 kills and 13 digs and Yisel Perez (Turlock/Pitman HS) spiked seven. Breanna Cannon (Phoenix/Pinnacle HS) ran most of the offense with 31 assists.

The Warriors opened the day with the win over Hawaii Pacific with Perez leading with nine kills and 13 digs plus four assisted blocks. Gardner had eight kills and Bella Rivera (Fremont/American HS) dished 30 assists.

In two matches, Jordon Wilson (Rialto/Mt. San Antonio College) had 11 total blocks (one solo) and libero Chelsey Berry (Tracy/Tracy HS) tallied 32 digs.

The Warriors have won four straight matches against Pacific West Conference opponents. They will face GNAC team Western Oregon and CCAA foe Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday at the Showcase.
