TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State men's soccer team played excellent defense on Sunday in a mellow conference contest before Cal State L.A. knocked in the winner to post a 1-0 win in overtime.
Leonard Nogueira's goal at 93:32 ended the relatively quiet match to break the stalemate as the strong Cal State L.A. team improved to 5-1-0, 2-0-0 CCAA. Despite the great effort, the Warriors fell to 0-2-0 in conference play after the first weekend (3-3-0 overall).
The Warriors, however, play solid defense in the match as they denied Golden Eagles' chances.
Desmond Madrigal played especially well on defense.
Cal State L.A. out-shot Stanislaus, 19-4, but only had five shots on frame. Stan State goalkeeper
Justin Motzkus was up to the challenging, stopping the first four shots on goals to keep the game scoreless.
However, a long pass by Jorge Chavez deep into the zone was softly touched by Daniel Simonis to Nogueria, who shot the ball across to Motzkus' right for the golden goal.
Adrian Yepez provided a great opportunity for Stan State in the 55th minute on a run-of-play play, but his shot went high. He also had a good look at the net less than a minute into the extra time but the shot went wide.
An atypical CCAA men's soccer match, the contest saw little action in the first half and not much physical play until late. Two LA players received cautions in the 79th and 84th minute and the match only had a total of 16 fouls (11-5, Stanislaus).
Stanislaus State, which opened the season 3-0, has lost three straight. The Warriors will look to get on track next weekend on the road at Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay.
