Big time individual performances lead to Stan State team victory

TURLOCK — Two huge individual performances paved the way for a great team victory as Stanislaus State posted a four-set victory over Cal State East Bay, 25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 25-20, Friday night.

The conference win, the Warriors' first at home, bumped the team record to 9-4 overall and 2-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The 2015 team also began the year 9-4 en route to the program's first CCAA tournament appearance.

Alana Wilson-Reid blasted a career-high 20 kills — the second biggest total by a Warrior this season — and Breanna Cannon dished 47 assists, her most since last October.

For Wilson-Reid, it wasn't just her total number of kills. She was dominant with her 31 swings, hitting just one error for a .613 attacking percentage — the fifth-best such number in the Stan State record book. In the Warriors' fourth set win, Wilson-Reid spiked eight kills after hitting 12-for-18 without an error prior.

Cannon, the sophomore setter, was a Pioneer-beater again as she put-up her second biggest assist-total of her career. Last Oct. 14, Cannon posted a career-high 53 assists in a five-set match against these same Pioneers. Cannon also led the team with 15 digs.

Rachel Klopfer had a nice well rounded match with 11 kills, 10 digs, three total blocks and two aces. Yisel Perez posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Ramey Gardner (14 digs, 7 kills), Mya Marshall (12 digs) and Jordon Wilson (5 kills, 3 blocks) also put-up some key numbers.

Even in the second-set loss, the Warriors were resilient. Trailing 24-11 and facing set-point, the Warriors rolled off eight straight points before East Bay finally was able to put the set away.

Deja Thompson and Kathey McKiernan each had 13 kills to lead the Pioneers (5-8, 1-4 CCAA).
